Langstone Junior Academy’s Approach to Maths
We promote talk and discussion to deepen understanding and challenge new concepts.
Because…
our children learn best through reflection and thinking when discussing with their peers.
We provide choices to allow children to challenge themselves and to promote independent enquiries.
Because…
we have found that our children are reluctant to independently challenge themselves and embrace the value of learning from their own mistakes and false starts. By encouraging this, we will be promoting their ability to reason and make sense of solutions.
We enable Maths to be inclusive to everyone.
Because…
we have found that children learn best when co-operating with their peers and learning from one another. We want all children to leave Langstone with a firm understanding of the mathematical skills needed for secondary school and later life.
We develop mathematical thinking through a three part process to embed concepts.
Because…
we have found that children can apply their learning more once they have the conceptual understanding.Through this, we are developing independent thinking.
Maths Planning and Assessment:
All planning should be driven by the aims…
- To become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, through varied and frequent practise of complex problems over time so that they have the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and justifying using mathematical language.
- Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into simpler steps and persevering in finding solutions.
Click on the overview for your child’s year group. It gives an oversight to when each mathematical concept is taught throughout the year but is subject to change due to the needs of the children. Some concepts may take longer and some may take less time.

Times Table Rockstars
We feel that encouraging children to learn their times tables is vital in supporting their understanding of mathematical concepts. As a result, we have invested into a program called ‘Times Table Rockstar’. It is a fun, exciting and engaging way for the children to learn their tables.

Automatic Training Mode
The company have launched an exciting mode called Automatic Training Mode. There are 420 levels and for each level, the children need to answer a certain amount of questions in a limited amount of time. Therefore, we have split up all the levels into stages of 60 so there will be 7 stages in total. At each of the 7 stages, the children will receive a certificate for each of the colours of the rainbow. When they finally achieve all 7 certificates and reach level 420, they will receive a Times Table Champion badge!
