Year 3 and 4:  Pupils should develop a positive attitude to reading and understanding of what they read. They should listen to and discuss a wide range of fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference books or textbooks. They should be familiar with a wide range of books including fairy stories and myths and legends.

Year 5 and 6:  Pupils should maintain positive attitudes towards reading and understanding of what they read. They should continue to read and discuss an increasingly wide range of fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference books or textbooks. They should increase their familiarity with a wide range of books including myths, legends and traditional stories, modern fiction, fiction from our literary heritage and books from other cultures and traditions.
